⚡️ Day 6 – A Meaningful Finale

Today, our Washington Youth Tour delegates experienced one of the most memorable and moving days of the trip.

The day began with a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, where students reflected on the sacrifice and service of the brave men and women who have served our nation. We were especially proud that Plateau Electric Cooperative was selected to participate in the wreath-laying ceremony, with our Overall Story Contest Winner, Emily Slaven, representing our cooperative in this special honor.

Students also visited the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, home to some of the most historic aircraft and space exploration artifacts in the world.

This evening, delegates will head to National Harbor before attending NRECA’s Youth Night, where they will connect with fellow students from across the country through networking, leadership activities, and cooperative education. Students will learn more about the cooperative difference, how electric cooperatives serve their communities, and the important role they play in developing future leaders.

As our Washington Youth Tour experience comes to a close, we are incredibly proud of these students. Throughout the week, they have explored our nation’s history, gained valuable leadership skills, and built lifelong friendships.

Washington Youth Tour 🇺🇸🚐

⚡️ Day 5 on Capitol Hill!

Today, our Washington Youth Tour delegates are spending the day in the heart of our nation’s government as they explore Capitol Hill and experience American democracy in action.

Students toured the Library of Congress, where they learned about the world’s largest library and its role in preserving our nation’s history and knowledge. Delegates will have the opportunity to tour the United States Capitol, gaining firsthand insight into the legislative process and the rich history of this iconic landmark.

One of the highlights of the day was meeting with Tennessee’s U.S. Senators, Bill Hagerty and Marsha Blackburn. Students had the chance to hear from their elected officials and learn more about public service. Fun fact; Marsha Blackburn was also a Washington Youth Tour delegate.

As the week continues, our delegates are gaining valuable experiences, building lasting friendships, and creating memories that will stay with them for years to come. We’re proud of these outstanding young leaders and all they have accomplished during their time in Washington, D.C.!

⚡️ Day 4 is underway!

Today began with a visit to George Washington’s Mount Vernon, where our delegates had the opportunity to explore the home of our nation’s first president. Students toured the mansion, visited the museum, walked through the gardens and farm, and gained a deeper understanding of George Washington’s life, leadership, and legacy.

It’s been a full week of sightseeing, walking, learning, networking, and making memories with fellow students from across the country—and there’s still so much more to experience!

Today’s agenda includes visits to the Korean War Veterans Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Washington National Cathedral, and the Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima). The day will conclude with the spectacular Sunset Parade, a memorable display of military precision and tradition.

⚡️ Day 3 is off to a strong start!

We’re thankful for a beautiful morning in our nation’s capital as our delegates begin another exciting day of exploration and learning.

The day kicked off with visits to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, where students had the opportunity to reflect on the leadership, service, and lasting impact of two remarkable figures in American history.

Plateau Electric Cooperative’s Washington Youth Tour delegates are officially underway on the trip of a lifetime!

⚡ Day 1 was filled with travel, networking opportunities, leadership development activities, and icebreakers as students connected with fellow delegates from across the state.

⚡ Day 2 is off to a fantastic start! Students began their day with a visit to Monticello, the historic home of President Thomas Jefferson. Delegates explored Jefferson’s home and gardens while learning about his life, leadership, and lasting impact on our nation’s history.

We’re excited to follow these outstanding students throughout the week as they experience our nation’s capital, build lifelong connections, and develop valuable leadership skills.

What a great afternoon we had at Solomon Park with Morgan County Food & Nutrition for their Summer Kick-Off Event! ☀️🍉⛱️

Plateau Electric Cooperative was proud to set up our Power Town safety display, where linemen Woody Bingham and Coby Jones educated students and parents about electrical safety and our restoration process following outages. Families also learned the importance of using caution around appliances, outlets, and other electrical equipment at home.

Our crew also shared an important reminder: never go near a downed power line. Whether you work in the electric industry or encounter downed lines as a member of the public, electrical hazards are extremely dangerous and should always be taken seriously.

At Plateau Electric Cooperative, we operate on seven Cooperative Principles, one of which is “Education, Training, and Information.” We are committed to not only informing our members, but educating our communities on the importance of electrical safety and the nature and benefits of cooperation.
